In the lead-up to the storm, six weather apps were scrutinized: AccuWeather, Weather Underground (Wunderground), Hyperlocal Dark Sky Tech & Radar, Foreca, The Weather Channel, and Google's Pixel Weather. Each app brought its unique strengths and weaknesses to the table.

AccuWeather: The Clear Winner

AccuWeather stood out as the most accurate app in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area. It was the only app that predicted the storm would deliver more ice than snow and had the timeline right, landing on Saturday evening.

The Weather Channel: A Close Second

The Weather Channel was a close second, providing accurate forecasts, although its website was plagued with intrusive ads that slowed down device performance.

The Struggling Contenders

Pixel Weather: Missing the Mark

Google's Pixel Weather app was found to be the least accurate, consistently underestimating the amount of ice and overestimating the snowfall. This inconsistency was particularly problematic as ice can be far more dangerous for travel than snow.

Foreca: Lacking Nuance

Foreca also struggled during the storm, failing to account for the expected ice and instead predicting large amounts of snow, which contradicted the forecasts of other apps.
