Analysis: Assam: Tea workers across Brahmaputra Valley stage strike, demand wage hike

Urgent Action Required: Assam Tea Workers Demand Wage Revision

Tea workers across Assam's Brahmaputra Valley recently staged a one-hour strike, signaling their growing frustration and warning of a potential massive statewide agitation if their wage revisions are not addressed promptly.

The Unrest: A Statewide Outcry

Led by the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), the protest saw a complete shutdown of operations during the demonstration, with workers from various tea estates participating. In Dibrugarh, workers from the Rajabari Tea Estate in Moran joined the protest.

The Demands: A Cry for Sustainable Wages

The central demand of the ACMS remains the immediate hike of daily wages to Rs 351, as the current wage of Rs 250 is no longer sustainable, given the soaring prices of essential food, fuel, and medicine.

The Context: Hardships in the Tea Community

ACMS leaders have highlighted that the stagnant wage, coupled with escalating living expenses, has pushed plantation families into severe financial hardship. This situation is particularly relevant to the North East region, where a significant portion of the population relies on the tea industry for livelihood.

The Future: A Potential Statewide Movement

If their demands are not met, the ACMS has threatened to launch an intensified statewide movement. This potential escalation underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action from the government and the Consultative Committee of Plantation Associations (CCPA).

Reflections: A Call for Solidarity

As we watch this unfold, it is essential for us in the North East region to empathize with our fellow workers in Assam and advocate for fair wages and living conditions. The tea industry's future and the well-being of its workers are intertwined, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their voices are heard.
