Daiaphi Lamare, popularly known by her stage name Reble, is making waves in the Indian hip-hop music scene. Hailing from West Jaintia Hills, this 24-year-old rapper has captured the nation's attention with her confident performances and powerful lyrics.
The Roots of Rebellion
Reble's stage name is a testament to her rebellious spirit. She explained, "A roommate of mine gave me the name. I've always been rebellious. When I wanted an artist name, she said, 'Maybe you should call yourself Rebel.'" The name, R-E-B-L-E, was a playful nod to her independent and defiant nature.
A Lifelong Passion for Music
Reble's love for music began before she turned a teenager. She found joy in writing her own songs and telling her story in her unique way. "I started writing my own stuff. I always believe that artistic expression is at its best when it occurs individually. When you can tell your story your own way," she recalled.
Inspiration and Collaboration
Eminem's 8 Mile has been a significant influence on Reble's music. She believes that art often stems from personal experiences and tragedy. "Some people can convert the deep sense of sadness into art, and some people can just feel it. As an artist, you can create imaginary scenarios in your head, or take inspiration from an external event. For me, music has always been influenced by my own experiences, and my art is a projection of that," she shared.
Bridging Cultures and Languages
Growing up in both Khasi and Pnar cultures, Reble learned both languages fluently. She plans to rap in both languages moving forward, but she is more comfortable with Pnar. "I know my mother tongue as much as anyone does, and I wish I knew more. When in school, we conversed in English, so I did not get the chance to learn Khasi properly," she said.
Artistic Freedom and Collaboration
Reble strongly advocates for artistic freedom and believes that musicians should have the flexibility to create their art without limitations. She enjoyed collaborating with the team on Dhurandhaar and hopes to collaborate with artists from her hometown in the future. "I want to go back and collaborate, and I want to change the pattern of not helping each other," she said.
Women Rappers in Northeast India
Reble is one of the best women rappers in the country, and she encourages more women to step into the music scene. "I never looked at it from that prism. I feel it is about how good you are at your art. But I think we don't have enough opportunities, or there is not enough good intent to help women in this space," she said.
Reble's music is inspiring many amateur rappers in the North East and beyond. As she continues to make her mark in the Indian music industry, she is adding a new dimension to the journey of women rappers in the region.
