Revising Electoral Processes: A Call for Change from Former Navy Chief

Former Navy Chief's Election-Related Concerns

In a recent social media post, the former Indian Navy chief, Admiral Arun Prakash, expressed his concerns regarding the electoral roll exercise and the need for revisions in the SIR form and the deployment of trained Booth-Level Officers (BLOs). His concerns were prompted by an inconvenient scheduling of his and his wife's appearances in election offices on two different dates.

Revising the SIR Form

Admiral Prakash suggested that the Election Commission of India (ECI) should revise the SIR form to capture more information, such as occupation and last known location, to make it more comprehensive.

Deploying Trained BLOs

He also urged the ECI to employ full-time, fully trained youth as BLOs, empowered to interact with citizens and verify documents. This, he believed, would ensure a more efficient and accurate electoral roll.

Public Awareness and Migrant Laborers

Admiral Prakash also emphasized the need for the public to be informed about the option to upload documents on the EC website. He expressed concern for migrant laborers who may be away from home and unable to produce documents.

Relevance to North East India and Beyond

The issues raised by Admiral Prakash are not limited to Goa but are relevant to the entire nation, including the North East region. Ensuring a fair and efficient electoral process is crucial for the democratic functioning of any country. Improvements in the electoral roll exercise, as suggested by Admiral Prakash, could serve as a model for other regions in India to follow.

Reflections and Forward Look

The Election Commission of India is currently in the process of preparing for the upcoming general elections. The concerns raised by Admiral Prakash should be taken into consideration to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process. It is essential that all citizens, regardless of their age, occupation, or location, are able to exercise their right to vote effectively.
