Arrest of PLA/RPF Members in Manipur: Implications and Analysis

Ongoing Anti-Insurgency Operations

In a significant development, security forces in Manipur have apprehended six cadres of the proscribed People's Liberation Army (PLA/RPF), the armed wing of the banned Revolutionary People's Front (RPF/PLA), since the beginning of 2026. These arrests were made across various districts in the Manipur valley, with the latest arrest taking place on January 11, 2026.

The Arrested Activists and Recovered Items

The most recent arrest was made on Thiyam Yaiphaba Meitei, also known as Pibarel (28), a resident of Ningomthong Bazar, Imphal West. He was apprehended from Yaripok Yambem Makha Leikai under Andro Police Station, Imphal East district. Six mobile phones, Aadhaar cards, and a white Maruti Alto were recovered from their possession, along with demand letters.

Historical Context and Inspiration

The PLA in Manipur was established on September 25, 1978, by N. Bisheshwar Singh. Inspired by China's PLA, the group aimed to create an independent socialist Manipur, with its early members receiving training in China.

Relevance to North East Region and India

The continued presence and activities of such outlawed groups in Manipur pose a significant challenge to the maintenance of law and order in the North East region of India. The arrest of these PLA/RPF members is a testament to the Indian security forces' commitment to combating insurgency and ensuring peace and stability in the region.

Looking Forward

The arrest of these six PLA/RPF members is a step forward in the ongoing fight against insurgency in Manipur. However, the eradication of such groups requires sustained efforts and collaboration between the security forces, local communities, and the government. The success of these efforts will be crucial in fostering a peaceful and prosperous future for the people of Manipur and the North East region as a whole.
