Indian Super League Set to Kick Off: All 14 Clubs Confirm Participation
After months of uncertainty, the Indian Super League (ISL) is finally set to commence on February 14, 2026, following the confirmation of participation from all 14 clubs. This development marks a significant milestone for Indian football, bringing excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season.
Clubs Formalize Participation
Initially, a few clubs were yet to confirm their participation in writing, despite the Sports Minister's announcement on January 6. However, all the clubs have now formally confirmed their participation in the truncated league, as confirmed by a source in the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to PTI on Monday.
Governing Council Board and Venues
The AIFF and the clubs are expected to have an online meeting on Tuesday to discuss the formation of the Governing Council Board and share details of the venues where the clubs plan to play their home matches. The meeting will also discuss the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the selection of a commercial rights partner and other related matters.
Financial Aspects and Budget
The 2025-26 season of the ISL is proposed to be held on a total budget of INR 24,26,74,000 with an initial contribution of INR 9,77,40,000 from the AIFF and a contribution of INR 1,00,00,000 each from the participating clubs. The AIFF has expressed willingness to accept the participation fee of Rs 1 crore per club in instalments up to June 2026, if clubs are unable to pay immediately.
Implications for North East Region and India
The Indian Super League, with its growing popularity, has been instrumental in promoting football across the country, including the North East region. The success of the ISL could inspire more young talents from the region to take up football, potentially boosting the sport's growth and popularity in the North East.
Looking Forward
With all 14 clubs now formally on board, the Indian Super League is poised to deliver an action-packed season, ending the months of uncertainty and setting the stage for some thrilling football action. As the countdown begins, fans across the country are eagerly waiting for the first kick-off on February 14.
