In a call for action, Tura MDC Bernard Marak has urged the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to address the issue of illegal mineral export in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. The MDC's plea stems from a complaint submitted on November 5, 2025, requesting immediate action against the illegal transportation and revenue evasion in boulder and coal export. Despite assurances given by the authorities, no action has been taken to stop the activity, leading to concerns about the safety and rights of the tribal population.

Bernard Marak has also accused certain political leaders of having a nexus with the illegal quarries, a claim that, if proven, could have significant implications for the political landscape of Meghalaya.

These include setting up checkpoints to register vehicles and check for legal documents from trucks carrying minerals, making it mandatory to obtain consent from Nokmas for non-tribals to run any trade within the area, mandating recommendation by the local MDC to obtain TNT for all non-tribals, and banning all illegal collections.
