Petrol Pumps Reopen in Manipur After Security Assurances

The Manipur Petroleum Dealers Fraternity has announced the immediate reopening of all petrol pumps in the state, following deliberations with the government over security concerns. This decision comes after a week-long closure of oil pumps, causing significant inconvenience to the public.

Revoked Strike and Reopening

The fraternity, in a press conference at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal, expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and clarified that the decision to shut down oil pumps was taken due to serious security concerns, particularly the risk of death or injury to employees following bomb attacks and similar incidents.

Security Measures and Compensation

The fraternity presented three demands to the government: provision of adequate security and protection for oil pumps, timely compensation by the government in the event of death or injury caused by bomb blasts or similar incidents, and compensation for damages caused to Elidas Fuel Station. The government agreed to provide security at oil pumps, and will examine the issue of compensation in accordance with existing rules and guidelines. A joint committee will be formed to examine cases of property damage.

Black Market Allegations and Denial

Responding to allegations of black-market sale of fuel during the strike, the fraternity stated that all oil pumps were closed as per a collective decision, and that fuel procured during an unusually heavy rush on January 9 was later sold in the black market by individuals, beyond the control of the dealers. The fraternity denied selling fuel separately or unofficially during the strike period.
