The discovery of Titania's woolly bat was the result of targeted surveys in December 2024, focusing on elusive forest-dwelling mammals. The bat was recorded near Thankharang village at approximately 870 meters above sea level. Due to their tiny size, fast flight, and ability to evade conventional mist nets, these bats are rarely recorded. To overcome this challenge, researchers employed specialized harp traps and acoustic lures, tools designed to intercept bats navigating through dense forest interiors.

Identifying the Mystery Bat: An Integrative Approach

Once captured, the species was identified using an integrative taxonomic approach that combined external morphology, baculum structure, mitochondrial DNA sequencing, echolocation call analysis, and wing morphology measurements. The results left no room for doubt: this was Kerivoula titania, a species never before documented within India's borders.

Titania's woolly bat is a forest-interior specialist, adapted for slow, highly maneuverable flight in cluttered vegetation. Its short, broad wings and high-frequency echolocation calls indicate a strong dependence on undisturbed tropical rainforest habitats, making it especially vulnerable to deforestation and habitat degradation.
