Analysis: Scientists explain use of space tech for societal benefits

Empowering Women in Arunachal Pradesh with Space Technology

Why this news matters

In an era where technology is increasingly shaping our world, it's crucial to ensure that everyone, especially women in rural areas, has access to its transformative potential. A recent awareness program in Arunachal Pradesh, organized by the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) and the Arunachal Pradesh Space Applications Centre (APSAC), aimed to do just that.

Empowering Women through Space Technology

The program, focused on tribal women, highlighted the growing role of space technology in inclusive development. APSAC Joint Director Dr Liagi Tajo underscored the importance of empowering women, particularly from tribal communities, with scientific knowledge and digital tools for sustainable societal progress.

Lectures on Space Technology Applications

Dr Chandan Goswami, scientist and state coordinator (Arunachal Pradesh), NESAC, delivered a lecture on the use of space technology for developmental activities. He showcased various applications, such as site suitability analysis for horticultural and agricultural crops, space technology for fishery development, border area development, disaster management, natural resource management, and more, with special reference to Arunachal Pradesh.

Empowerment and Progress

Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Ratan Anya emphasized the use of space technology for empowering women and urged the participants to become progressive entrepreneurs using the latest technologies.

Utilizing Space Technology for Sustainable Development

Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women Member Secretary Yakar Dawe stressed the use of space technology in site suitability mapping and urged APSAC to plan for orientation of youths of Arunachal through space technology awareness programs.

A Look at the Future: UAV Applications

A dedicated technical session on UAV (drone) applications was conducted by Dorzon Mugli, technical engineer at the APSAC. The session included a live demonstration on the use of drones in mapping, agriculture, infrastructure planning, and disaster response.

Impact on the North East Region and Beyond

The applications discussed during this program have significant implications for the North East region and India as a whole. By adopting alternative farming practices using modern technologies like remote sensing and GIS, as urged by the commission members, Arunachal Pradesh can move towards sustainable agriculture and resource management.

Reflecting on the Program and Looking Ahead

The awareness program is a step towards bridging the digital divide and empowering women in rural areas. As technology continues to evolve, initiatives like these will play a crucial role in ensuring that everyone, regardless of their location or background, can benefit from its transformative potential.
