Kuki-Zo Groups Demand Faster Political Settlement in Manipur
In a significant move, the Kuki Zo Council (KZC) and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) organized a massive public rally in Manipur's Churachandpur district on January 14, 2026. The rally aimed to pressure the Centre for an expedited political settlement for the Kuki-Zo people, including their long-standing demand for a Union Territory with Legislature.
United Front
The rally was supported by thousands of people who gathered at three designated locations before marching together towards Peace Ground at Tuibong. Carrying banners and placards, protesters demanded separate administration and Union Territory status, raising slogans throughout the procession.
Broad Support
Ginza Vualzong, spokesperson of both the ITLF and the KZC, stated that similar public rallies were being organized in all Kuki-Zo inhabited districts, including Churachandpur, Tamenglong, Kangpokpi, and Chandel. He emphasized that the mobilization was intended to urge the Centre to accelerate the political process.
Political Charters and Talks
The Kuki-Zo Council had previously submitted a political charter to the Government of India, seeking Union Territory status with Legislature under Article 239A of the Constitution. While political talks have been initiated with the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People's Front (UPF), both Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups, the community is seeking faster and more decisive progress towards a settlement.
