Analysis: Elephants death spotlights conditions in safari tourism

The Tragedy of Swarnamoyee: Kaziranga's Safari Elephant

A Tragic End for Kaziranga's Safari Elephant

On the morning of December 11, 2025, a 50-year-old safari elephant named Swarnamoyee collapsed unexpectedly on National Highway-715, inside Kaziranga National Park (KNP), Assam. Despite medical attention, she could not recover and passed away, raising concerns about the treatment and well-being of elephants used in safaris.

The Health and Welfare of Safari Elephants

Conservationist and mahout Parbati Barua expressed concern about the stress and poor living conditions that safari elephants face. She emphasized the importance of mahouts in ensuring the well-being of these animals and the need for regular medical screenings and proper training for them.

Activist Pranab Doley highlighted the importance of safari elephants as a source of livelihood for many people, particularly mahouts, but stressed the necessity of proper care and regular medical checks for these animals.

The Role of Mahouts and the Challenges They Face

The death of Swarnamoyee devastated tour operator Pinku Ali, who employed the elephant. Mahouts, such as Hem Chandra, the mahout of Swarnamoyee, play a crucial role in the care and management of safari elephants. However, the demanding nature of the job and the financial pressures associated with it can take a toll on them.

Livelihood and Economic Implications

Elephant safaris provide a significant source of income for locals in Kaziranga, particularly mahouts and tour operators. However, the profitability of this activity has been decreasing due to increased competition from jeep safaris and rising costs associated with maintaining elephants.

Despite the challenges, many continue to rely on elephant safaris as their primary source of income, as alternative employment opportunities are limited in the region.

Looking Ahead

The tragic death of Swarnamoyee serves as a stark reminder of the need to prioritize the health and welfare of safari elephants in Kaziranga National Park. Ensuring proper care, regular medical screenings, and appropriate living conditions for these animals is crucial for their well-being and for the sustainability of the tourism industry in the region.

In addition, efforts should be made to provide training and support for mahouts, helping them to better care for the elephants in their charge and ensuring their own well-being as well.
