National Startup Day: Assam's Growth in India's Startup Ecosystem

India's National Startup Day, celebrated on January 16, marks a decade since the launch of the Startup India initiative. This program has significantly impacted India's entrepreneurial landscape, particularly in the Northeastern state of Assam.

Expansion of the Startup Ecosystem

Launched in 2016, Startup India aimed to strengthen India's entrepreneurial ecosystem, which, at the time, consisted of around 400 startups and faced challenges in accessing capital and combating widespread perceptions of entrepreneurship as high-risk. Over the past decade, the program has facilitated the growth of India's startup ecosystem, with more than two lakh startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), recording a compounded annual growth rate of 95% since 2016.

Geographical and Social Diversity

The growth in India's startup ecosystem has been geographically and socially diverse. More than half of the recognized startups are based in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, with nearly half having at least one woman director. Startups are active across 56 or more sectors, including IT services, healthcare, education, agriculture, and construction.

Assam's Contribution

Assam's startup ecosystem has grown during this period, supported by policies and schemes under Startup India. Companies like RC Hobbytech Solutions Pvt. Ltd., a Guwahati-based drone technology firm, have benefited from the program, availing income tax exemptions and using the savings to invest in research, development, manufacturing expansion, and talent development.

Dessoi Naturals LLP: A Success Story

Another Assam-based startup, Dessoi Naturals LLP from Jorhat, operates as a premium tea and wellness brand focused on natural and sustainably sourced blends. The company received debt support under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, which helped expand its market presence across India and develop collaborations with prestigious brands like Audi, Mercedes, and Porsche.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

The success stories from Assam demonstrate how policy support, access to funding, and institutional frameworks have contributed to startup growth across regions, including Northeast India. This growth is crucial for employment generation, innovation, and inclusive entrepreneurship nationwide.

Looking Ahead

As the Startup India initiative completes a decade, it continues to focus on promoting innovation, employment generation, and inclusive entrepreneurship across India. The program's success in Assam and other Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities offers hope for continued growth and development in the startup ecosystem, benefiting not only the states but also the broader Indian economy.
