Mizoram Strengthens Earthquake Preparedness with Statewide Drill
In a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens, Mizoram conducted a statewide mock exercise on Thursday to test its emergency response and relief operations in the event of an earthquake. The exercise, organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R) department, aimed to ensure a swift and efficient response to civilians in the face of such a disaster.
Collaborative Efforts and Mock Scenarios
The mock exercise involved the participation of various agencies, including District Quick Response Forces, Fire and Emergency Services, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), medical teams, NGOs, and local volunteers. Mock scenarios, such as building collapses, fire outbreaks, and various casualties, were staged at 36 locations across the state.
Involvement of Neighboring States and Simulated Operations
State disaster response forces from neighboring Assam and Tripura also took part in the mock drill in Kolasib and Mamit, demonstrating the collaborative spirit among Northeastern states in times of crisis. Various line departments, including Public Health Engineering (PHE), Public Works Department (PWD), Power and Electricity (P&E), Transport, and Information and Public Relations, participated in simulating rescue and relief operations amidst collapsed buildings, fires, road blockages, and communication failures.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Operations at incident sites, staging areas, and relief camps were monitored via video conferencing at District Emergency Operation Centres, with senior NDMA consultant Brig. Ravinder Gurung (Retd.) overseeing the drill from the State Emergency Operation Centre in Aizawl. Gurung was accompanied by state observers and former state DM&R principal secretary PC Lallawmsanga, and former DM&R director Dominic Lalhmangaiha.
