Analysis: Gaurav Gogoi leads Nalbari rally, criticises Kaziranga elevated corridor project

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Criticizes Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Criticizes Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project

Criticisms and Opposition to the Kaziranga Project

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi has strongly opposed the Rs 7,000-crore Kaziranga elevated corridor project, arguing that the funds should be diverted to flood protection measures instead. Gogoi made these remarks during a public meeting in Nalbari, Assam, on January 17, 2026.

Funds Diversion for Flood Protection

Gogoi stated that the funds allocated for the Kaziranga project could have been better utilized in building river embankments to address Assam's recurring flood crisis. He emphasized that every year, floods devastate lives, homes, and livelihoods, and this money could have provided lasting protection to lakhs of families.

Environmental Concerns

Gogoi also questioned the ecological impact of the Kaziranga project, citing concerns among environmentalists about large-scale infrastructure interventions affecting wildlife movement and disturbing the fragile ecology of Kaziranga. He stressed that development should not come at the cost of nature and people's survival.

Political Allegations and Comments

Criticisms of the BJP-led Government

Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of having priorities disconnected from the real problems of the people. He claimed that announcements made by the BJP during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Assam had failed to translate into real relief for the people.

Land Grabbing Allegations

Gogoi alleged that the BJP had allowed land meant for common citizens to fall into the hands of politically powerful individuals. He stated that fear had become a part of daily life, and people were even scared to keep cattle due to rampant theft.

Switching Political Alliances

Gogoi took a swipe at leaders who switched sides, stating that those who once claimed they could deliver land rights, education, and healthcare had weakened the Congress through corruption. He accused these leaders of repeating the same practices and weakening governance further after joining the BJP.

Looking Ahead: Reviving the Inclusive Vision of Assam

Gogoi expressed the Congress's commitment to reviving the inclusive vision of Assam envisioned by icons such as Jyotiprasad Agarwala. He emphasized that the Bor Assam plan dreamt by Jyotiprasad Agarwala and other great leaders was what they wanted to take forward.

Gogoi also urged the Prime Minister to visit Jubin Kshetra in Sonapur and confer the Bharat Ratna on late singer Zubeen Garg, stating that Assam's cultural icons deserved national recognition.

As the political landscape in Assam continues to evolve, public interest is shifting towards the Congress alliance. Gogoi remarked that there are daily telephonic discussions on the alliance, indicating that people are looking for an alternative.
