Supporting Displaced Children: A Significant Step towards Child Rights Protection
In a commendable move towards safeguarding the rights of children, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has initiated a unique project in Kakching district. The project aims to provide long-term support to internally displaced children, offering assistance in education and career development.
Bank Accounts for Displaced Children
Under this initiative, individual bank accounts have been opened for the displaced children. This step, according to MCPCR Chairperson Keisam Pradikumar, will ensure timely and effective interventions for these children, with a strong focus on protection and mental health. The Kakching Child Welfare Committee has been instrumental in facilitating the opening of these accounts.
The Role of Convergence
The MCPCR, in collaboration with the district administration and the District Child Welfare Committee, organized a District-Level Convergence Meeting to discuss the issues of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) children. The purpose of this meeting, as Pradikumar explained, is to foster coordinated action, with different agencies and officials working together towards a shared goal.
The Grave Violation of Child Rights
It is estimated that around 25,000 children have been displaced due to ethnic violence in Manipur, which occurred on May 3, 2023. This situation, according to the MCPCR, represents a grave violation of child rights.
The Way Forward
Deputy Commissioner of Kakching, Uppuluri Chaitanya (IAS), urged all stakeholders and concerned departments to work collectively and to the best of their abilities for the welfare of IDP children. The meeting concluded with interactive discussions between officials and IDPs present at the programme.
This initiative in Kakching district serves as a beacon of hope for displaced children in Manipur. Such efforts, if replicated across the state and the nation, can significantly contribute to the overall welfare of children, particularly in times of crisis.
