Analysis: Mizoram simulates major earthquake in statewide drill

Earthquake Preparedness in Mizoram: A Major Step Towards Disaster Resilience

Earthquake Preparedness in Mizoram: A Major Step Towards Disaster Resilience

In the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram, a debriefing meeting was held following a state-level earthquake mock exercise. This event, jointly organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Disaster Management & Rehabilitation (DM&R) Department of the Mizoram government, marked a significant stride towards enhancing disaster preparedness in the region.

Coordinated Response and Inter-State Cooperation

Prof. Lalnilawma, the Mizoram DM&R Minister, highlighted the importance of close coordination between state government departments, central government agencies, and trained volunteers in successfully conducting the drill. He also emphasized the need for cooperation beyond state boundaries, as exemplified by the Assam State Disaster Response Force's participation in Kolasib district.

High Seismic Risk and Regular Training

Being located in a high seismic risk zone, Mizoram falls within one of India's highest earthquake risk categories, according to seismic zonation guidelines issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). To ensure effective earthquake response, regular training, rehearsals, and inter-state coordination are crucial.

Strengthening Early Warning Systems and Infrastructure

The Minister underscored the importance of strengthening early warning systems and upgrading disaster response infrastructure. While acknowledging existing rescue and relief equipment, he stressed the need for additional modern resources to improve response capacity in the event of a major earthquake.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

Given the high seismic risk in the northeastern region of India, the lessons learned from this exercise are highly relevant to other states in the region. Effective disaster preparedness and response mechanisms are essential for minimizing loss of life and property in the event of a seismic emergency.

Looking Forward: Enhancing Disaster Resilience

The commitment and professionalism displayed by all participating agencies during the earthquake mock exercise bode well for Mizoram's disaster resilience. The debriefing meeting served as a valuable opportunity to identify areas for improvement and build upon the successes achieved. As the region continues to face numerous natural and man-made challenges, strengthening disaster preparedness and response will remain a critical priority.
