A Haven for Stray Animals in Arunachal Pradesh
In the heart of Northeast India, Tarun Jamoh, a dedicated animal lover, has established the Arunachal Dog & Cat Rescue (ADCR) foster care center. The center, initially operated from his home in Chandranagar, has now found a permanent home in Lekhi village's Rainbow Colony.
From Humble Beginnings to a Cooperative Community
Jamoh's journey began alone in 2019, but since then, the center has garnered support from various individuals and local authorities. Jamoh notes that feeding stray dogs has become more common, and the police authorities have shown increased cooperation compared to earlier times.
Financial Challenges and Community Support
In the initial stages, Jamoh funded the center from his part-time job earnings. Now, he dedicates his time full-time to the center, with the majority of funds coming from his family and well-wishers. However, irregular funding and the lack of government aid pose significant challenges.
Promoting Local Businesses for a Cause
Recently, influencer Deja Bayor and podcaster Techi Kokololo initiated a 100-day promotional campaign, "Charity & Content," to support 10 homegrown businesses in Itanagar. The earnings from these promotions will be used to develop the ADCR foster center.
Adoption and the Need for Change
The ADCR currently houses 25 dogs, offering medical assistance to those in need and arranging adoptions through social media pages. However, only 10% of the dogs are adopted. Jamoh urges the public to adopt dogs instead of purchasing them, emphasizing that every adoption makes a difference.
Addressing Animal Abuse in Arunachal Pradesh
Jamoh points out that places like Ziro, Aalo, and the Itanagar Capital Region have the most reported cases of animal abuse. As the ADCR continues to grow and gain support, it serves as a reminder of the need to address animal welfare issues across the region.
Reflections and Looking Forward
The Arunachal Dog & Cat Rescue is more than just a shelter; it's a testament to the power of community support and an individual's dedication to making a difference. As we continue to face challenges in animal welfare, initiatives like the ADCR offer hope for a future where every stray animal finds a loving home.
