Nagaland's Push for Political Solution: A Unified Voice and the Road Ahead
In a significant move aimed at resolving the long-standing Naga political issue, the Nagaland government's Political Affairs Committee (PAC) has proposed the formation of a Naga Common Platform. This platform is expected to bridge the divide between various civil societies in the region.
Towards a Unified Civil Society
Deputy Chief Minister and PAC co-convener TR Zeliang highlighted the need for an apex body to discuss the Naga political issue. He emphasized that such a group would provide a more effective mandate than the fragmented organizations currently in existence.
The state government is encouraging tribal hohos (apex bodies) to come together and unify all Naga political groups under one umbrella. This unified platform is intended to ensure a singular and cohesive voice in political negotiations, strengthening the representation of the Naga people.
Revisiting the Framework Agreement
The push for a political solution in Nagaland is not a new endeavor. A framework agreement was signed in 2015, following over 80 rounds of negotiations spanning 18 years. However, the final solution is yet to be achieved, primarily due to the government's reluctance to accept the NSCN (IM)'s demand for a separate flag and constitution.
Besides the framework agreement with the NSCN(IM), the Centre also inked an agreed position with Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) in 2017. However, the path to a resolution remains challenging.
