Unfulfilled Promises: Pension for Freedom Fighters' Families in Assam

The Assam State Freedom Fighters Association has threatened an indefinite hunger strike against the Assam government, alleging the failure to honor a long-standing promise of granting a pension to one eligible successor from each family of the state's freedom fighters.

Delayed Pension Proposals

The Association claims that despite repeated assurances, no concrete steps have been taken to sanction pensions for eligible beneficiaries. The government has failed to act on pension proposals for over 1,400 successors of freedom fighters, most of whom are no longer alive.

Procedural Hurdles and Uncertainty

The Association alleges that the matter is being prolonged through procedural formalities, leaving affected families in prolonged uncertainty. They claim that all required processes, including district-level verification by respective Deputy Commissioners, have been completed.

Financial Implications and Response

The Association has submitted detailed calculations to the Chief Minister outlining the annual financial implications if a monthly pension of Rs 10,000, Rs 15,000, Rs 20,000, or Rs 25,000 were to be sanctioned for the identified beneficiaries. Despite the completion of all formalities, no decision has been taken so far.

Regional and National Implications

The ongoing issue in Assam highlights the need for timely implementation of promises made to our freedom fighters and their families. If not addressed promptly, such delays could potentially lead to widespread protests and unrest, which could have broader implications for the North East region and the country as a whole.

Looking Ahead

As the Assam State Freedom Fighters Association threatens an indefinite hunger strike, it is crucial for the Assam government to address this issue promptly and ensure that the families of freedom fighters receive the pensions they are entitled to. Failure to do so could potentially harm the government's relationship with the people and undermine the respect and gratitude due to those who fought for our nation's freedom.
