Analysis: Assam: Kokrajhar tense after violent clashes; RAF deployed, internet suspended

Unrest in Kokrajhar: A Tense Standoff in Western Assam

Unrest in Kokrajhar: A Tense Standoff in Western Assam

Tensions escalated in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Tuesday following clashes between the Bodo and Adivasi communities, prompting the state government to suspend mobile internet services to prevent further escalation.

Violence and Retaliation

The unrest began late Monday night when a Scorpio vehicle carrying three Bodo youths allegedly hit two Adivasi persons on Mansingh Road. The incident led to retaliation by local villagers, resulting in the vehicle being set ablaze, and the occupants being assaulted. One person lost his life in the incident.

Protests and Disruption of Normal Life

Tensions escalated rapidly on Tuesday as members of both communities blocked the National Highway, burned tyres, set fire to houses and a government office, and allegedly attacked the Karigaon police outpost. As protests turned violent, stone-pelting mobs clashed with security forces, leading to lathi-charge, tear gas shelling, and firing to disperse the crowd.

The unrest brought normal life to a standstill and triggered panic among residents.

Efforts to Restore Peace

In response, the administration deployed additional police forces and rushed two companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) to the area. The Director General of Police (DGP) and other senior police officials were dispatched to oversee security operations.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed arrangements are in place to deploy the Army if required, while the RAF is already on the ground. He appealed for calm and urged people to maintain peace and cooperate with the administration to ensure normalcy returns at the earliest.

Implications for North East and India

The ongoing tension in Kokrajhar has significant implications for the North East region and India as a whole, as it underscores the need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms and sustainable peace-building strategies. The region has a history of ethnic and communal conflicts, and addressing these issues is crucial for promoting unity, harmony, and development.

Reflections and Looking Forward

As the situation in Kokrajhar remains tense, it is essential to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and justice to address the underlying grievances fueling the conflict. It is also crucial to ensure that the basic rights of all communities are protected and that the rule of law is upheld.

Moving forward, it is essential for the state and central governments to work closely with local communities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to find lasting solutions to these complex issues. The ongoing unrest in Kokrajhar serves as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead and the need for sustained efforts to build a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous North East India.
