Manipur's Crisis: A Call for Responsible Governance

Manipur's Crisis: A Call for Responsible Governance

In the northeastern state of Manipur, a five-year tenure of governance has sparked controversy, with the Congress party accusing the BJP-led central government of mishandling the state's affairs. The allegations, made during a recent visit by AICC in-charge of Manipur Christopher Tilak, highlight concerns over the state's security, economy, and social unrest.

Economic Disaster and Security Concerns

Tilak asserted that the state's economy is in a dire state due to the central government's irresponsible handling over the past five years. He also expressed concerns about the security situation, particularly the border security, which has become a significant issue.

Communal Violence and President's Rule

Since May 2023, Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kukis, resulting in the deaths of at least 260 people and displacing thousands. The state has been under President's Rule since February 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

The MGNREGA Issue

During his visit, Tilak emphasized the Congress's nationwide campaign to demand the withdrawal of the VB G-RAM G Act, restore MGNREGA as a rights-based law, and uphold the right to work. He also criticized the changes made to the scheme and expressed his intention to lead the MGNREGA Bachao Sangram campaign throughout Manipur.

Implications for North East and India

The crisis in Manipur is not only a local concern but also has broader implications for the northeastern region and India as a whole. The economic instability and security concerns in Manipur could potentially affect the stability of the entire region. Moreover, the ongoing communal violence underscores the need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms in the northeast.

Looking Forward

As Manipur continues to grapple with its challenges, it is crucial for all political parties to prioritize the needs of the people and work towards sustainable solutions. The Congress's call for responsible governance serves as a reminder to all stakeholders to uphold the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability.
