Mizoram's Energy Ambitions: A Giant Leap Towards Self-Reliance
In a significant move, Mizoram, a northeastern state of India, has taken a major step towards strengthening its power generation and energy self-reliance with the launch of a 24-megawatt Tuirini Small Hydro Electricity Power Project. This initiative, located on the banks of the Tuirini River, is expected to bring about a transformative change in the state's energy landscape.
Boosting Power Generation with External Aid
Funded by the Shanghai-based New Development Bank, the Tuirini project is an Externally Aided Project, with a total cost of 676.98 crore. The project, planned for completion within five years, will see 80% of the cost borne by the Central Government and the remaining 20% by the Mizoram Government.
Mizoram's Commitment to Clean Energy
Mizoram's dedication to clean energy is evident in its fully-owned solar power projects, including a 10 MW solar power plant at Thenzawl and a 5 MW solar plant at Sumsuih, currently under construction. These initiatives reflect the state government's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
Expanding Solar Energy Initiatives
The Chief Minister also announced plans for setting up solar plants at five locations across Mizoram, with 75 Village Councils offering land for future solar projects. The government aims to take up these projects in a phased manner, further expanding the state's renewable energy capacity.
Pump Storage Project and Rooftop Solar Installations
An upcoming initiative is a pump storage project at Tuichang Lui near the Vankal Solar Park, aimed at improving power availability during peak demand hours and enabling power trading. Additionally, rooftop solar installations are gaining momentum in Mizoram, with 791 systems already installed across the state, generating a combined capacity of 2.62 MW.
Financial Benefits from Power Trading
Despite not being fully self-sufficient in power generation, Mizoram has benefited financially through power trading. By making timely payments under long-term power purchase agreements, Mizoram has been able to trade surplus power and earn rebates. The state has earned over 172 crore in revenue from power trading, with a net profit of more than 87 crore and additional rebates amounting to over 6.5 crore.
