Cultural Tourism Initiative in Meghalaya: BJP's Plea to Union Minister
In a bid to safeguard the rich cultural heritage of North East India, particularly Meghalaya, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai recently met Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi.
Promoting Cultural Schemes and Traditional Markets
During the meeting, Shullai emphasized the need for various cultural schemes to be initiated in Meghalaya to protect the traditional Seng Khasi and Seng Raid culture and Songsarek Garo culture. He proposed the setting up of a cultural heritage and traditional market at Mawlai CRPF camp, which he believes will showcase the richness of North East culture and boost cultural tourism.
Tourism Development and Employment Generation
Shullai also requested the union minister to initiate tourism development schemes in South Shillong constituency, including the ropeway project, as it will generate employment opportunities for the local people.

In addition, the BJP leader discussed the delay in the completion of the 4-lane road from Umshyrpi to Sadew and the unattended drainage issue in Shillong Cantonment area with Union Minister for Road and Transport Nitin Gadkari. He also urged the minister to expedite the construction of a flyover from Barik to Jhalupara taxi stand to ease traffic congestion.
