Analysis: Consensus builds to include Mizo language in Eighth Schedule

Progress Towards Including Mizo Language in India's Eighth Schedule

Mizo Language Inching Closer to Eighth Schedule of India's Constitution

In a significant step towards cultural recognition, the Chief Minister of Mizoram recently met with the Eighth Schedule Study Group to discuss the progress of efforts to include the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Consensus and Consultation

The Study Group, comprising members from various organizations and communities across Mizoram, reported that they have gathered extensive public opinion on the matter. The consensus, they stated, is overwhelmingly in favor of including Mizo in the Eighth Schedule.

This consensus is not surprising, given the importance of Mizo as a unifying language among Zo communities across the globe. It is the official language of Mizoram and serves as a common medium of communication.

The Study Group's findings also highlight a lack of concrete follow-up on earlier proposals submitted by the state government. To address this, they suggested the formation of a Task Group to resubmit the proposal more effectively.

Global Recognition and Growing Popularity

Mizo has received recognition from several prestigious institutions. The Sahitya Akademi recognizes it, and it can be studied up to the PhD level. The People's Linguistic Survey of India classified it as a growing language, while UNESCO listed it under the Vulnerable category.

According to the 2011 Census, there were 8,30,846 Mizo speakers in Mizoram alone. While the exact number since then is not known, estimates suggest a global Mizo-speaking population of over 2.2 million.

Recently, Mizo was included in Google Translate, further enhancing its global presence.

Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

The inclusion of Mizo in the Eighth Schedule would not only be a significant cultural recognition for the Mizo community but also for the Northeast region of India, where numerous ethnic languages are spoken.

This move could inspire other states in the region to pursue similar efforts, fostering a more inclusive and diverse national identity.

Looking Forward

The final report from the Study Group is yet to be submitted, but the progress made so far is promising. The Chief Minister's assurance of appropriate follow-up action offers hope for the Mizo community and the broader Northeast region.

As the process continues, it is crucial to maintain the momentum and ensure that the recommendations and proposals are thoroughly considered, taking into account the cultural, linguistic, and historical significance of the Mizo language.
