Revitalizing Coal Mining Areas in East Jaintia Hills: An Environment-Friendly Approach

Community-Led Initiatives for Sustainable Livelihoods

In East Jaintia Hills, a pilot intervention named Community Livelihood Improvement Project-CLIP has been successfully implemented. This project, a collaboration between the Block Resource Management Committee (BRMC), Community Resource-based Organizations (CRBO), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) funded livelihood project LIPH, aims to provide alternative livelihoods to ten affected villages due to the anti-coal mining activities.

Expert Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions

Experts such as Naba Bhattacharjee, Technical Advisor on Forests and Environment, and B. Wahlang, CCF and Member, have been instrumental in brainstorming activities to benefit the coal mining-affected villages. Officials from Mining and Geology, along with the district administration, have also been actively involved in this process.

Meghalaya Environmental Protection Restoration Fund (MEPRF) and the Meghalaya High Court

The BRMC's commitment towards rural communities in the district has led to the implementation of projects supported under the Meghalaya Environmental Protection Restoration Fund (MEPRF) in accordance with the Meghalaya High Court's direction. These projects aim to address and implement livelihood activities for the affected villages.

Training and Capacity Building

As part of the initial intervention, the BRMC conducted a one-day capacity building training program in several villages, focusing on training local farmers into Farmers Producer Groups (FPG). The training was facilitated by Randolph Langstieh from the Social Work Department at Captain Williamson Sangma, State University Meghalaya, and the team of the BRMC.

Oyster Mushroom Propagation

At Iongkaluh, a training on Oyster Mushroom propagation was initiated, gaining significant interest among the women members of Pynroilang Farmers Producer Group. Similar training sessions have been planned for other villages within the project.

Relevance to North East Region and Broader India

The initiatives in East Jaintia Hills highlight the importance of sustainable livelihoods and community-led development in coal mining areas. As India continues to prioritize coal mining for energy security, similar models can be replicated across the country, especially in coal-rich regions like the North East, to ensure the well-being of local communities and the environment.
