Unveiling a New Era of Development in North East India
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, recently announced that the Government of India has allocated approximately Rs 6.5 lakh crore for the region's development since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office. This substantial investment is set to transform the North East, with Tripura serving as a shining example of its potential.
Tripura's Remarkable Growth
In the last decade, Tripura has surpassed the national average of growth by a significant margin. The state's GDP grew at a rate of 10.5 to 11 percent per annum, contrasting the national compounded growth rate of 6.5 percent. This rapid growth has propelled Tripura towards becoming a regional powerhouse, outperforming the 36 states and Union Territories of the country combined by 125 percent.
Connecting the North East to South East Asia
Scindia highlighted that Guwahati and Tripura are poised to become two gateways for the North East towards South East Asia. Infrastructure development has been a key focus, with the highway network expanding from 850 km to 1,550 km in the last ten years. The rail and air freight connectivity have also seen improvements, enhancing the region's overall connectivity.
Industrialization and Investment
Under Scindia's leadership, the DoNER Ministry has organized investment summits in metro cities, resulting in MoUs worth Rs 55,000 crore. The aim is to convert these MoUs into full-fledged industrial units across the North East, including Tripura.
Investing in Tripura's Agarwood Sector and Tourism
Scindia announced plans for a pilot project for the agarwood sector in Tripura and Assam, with a cluster-level processing unit for agarwood set to be established at Kadamtala in North Tripura district. Additionally, foundation stones for projects worth Rs 280 crore under the Matabari tourism sector will be unveiled at Narikelkunja.
A Personal Connection: Tripura and the Scindia Family
Scindia expressed a personal connection to Tripura, as his aunt, Maharani Padmavati Raje, was married to Maharaja Kirit Bikram Manikya of Tripura's Manikya dynasty. This familial bond adds a unique perspective to his dedication to the region's development.
