Dibrugarh's Khanikar Stadium: A New Era for Sports in Assam

Dibrugarh's Khanikar Stadium: A New Era for Sports in Assam

The Khanikar Stadium in Dibrugarh is on the brink of becoming Assam's largest multi-sports arena, marking a significant expansion of the state's sports infrastructure. This development is set to position Dibrugarh as a major sporting destination within Assam and bolster the sports culture across Upper Assam.

A Modern Multi-Sports Complex

The first phase of the project, which is nearing completion, will have a seating capacity of approximately 5,000 spectators. Subsequent phases are planned to expand this capacity to nearly 35,000. The complex, developed across 104 bighas at an estimated cost of Rs 233 crore, will cater to various sports disciplines such as athletics, football, swimming, and more. It will also feature an indoor stadium, hostel accommodation, a VIP block, and a main gallery.

Boosting Sports Infrastructure in Assam

The upgraded stadium will offer young athletes access to contemporary training and practice facilities. Moreover, it will enable Dibrugarh to host large-scale sporting events, fostering a competitive sports culture in the region. This development aligns with the broader Indian goal of enhancing sports infrastructure and nurturing sporting talent across the country.

North East Region and Beyond

In the North East region, where sports infrastructure has historically been lacking, such developments are crucial. By providing modern facilities, the Khanikar Stadium will not only boost the sports culture in Dibrugarh but also encourage the growth of sports in the surrounding areas. This could potentially lead to the discovery and nurturing of local talent, contributing to the regional sports scene.

Looking Forward

The inauguration of the first phase of the Khanikar Stadium is scheduled for January 30, 2023. As Assam gears up for this transformative step, the anticipation is palpable. The completion of this project not only signifies the progress of Dibrugarh but also serves as a testament to the commitment of the Assam government towards the development of sports infrastructure in the state.
