Empowering Women in Tawang: A Step Towards Sustainable Livelihoods
In a significant move towards promoting rural entrepreneurship and women empowerment, Tawang, a picturesque town in Arunachal Pradesh, recently inaugurated a rural mart and Mother's Kitchen. This initiative, funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), aims to formalize micro food processing enterprises and boost local economic growth.
Boosting Local Production and Preserving Cultural Heritage
The newly inaugurated rural mart, run by women self-help groups (SHGs) of Tawang, showcases and sells a diverse range of locally produced herbs, traditional snacks, pickles, and other indigenous products. This initiative not only promotes local production but also preserves the rich culinary and cultural heritage of the region.
Promoting Sustainable Income Generation for Rural Women
The Mother's Kitchen, a flagship initiative of the Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ArSRLM), aims to institutionalize catering units managed by women SHGs. The initiative focuses on providing safe, hygienic, and nutritious food while creating a sustainable income generation model for rural women.
Capacitating Women for Success
The ArSRLM provides capacity building, continuous handholding support, and financial assistance of Rs 30,000 as seed capital to each Mother's Kitchen. This support helps formalize their operations and enables them to cater to a wider market.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Opportunities for Local Youth and Women
The Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, Namgyal Angmo, encouraged the SHGs to maintain high standards of quality and service. She also urged them to experiment with new dishes to broaden their offerings. Furthermore, she directed the BMMU to conceptualize similar innovative initiatives to promote local arts, crafts, and entrepreneurship, thereby involving more local youths and women in livelihood activities.
This initiative in Tawang holds immense significance for the North East region and India as a whole. It not only empowers women by providing them with sustainable income opportunities but also preserves the rich cultural heritage of the region.
