Education Empowerment: Assam's Commitment to Tea Garden Communities
In a significant move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced an expansion of schooling infrastructure and new welfare measures aimed at improving social mobility among tea garden families. This initiative, launched under the Eti Koli, Duti Paat welfare scheme, has the potential to set a precedent for tea-growing regions across North East India.

Under the Eti Koli, Duti Paat scheme, Rs 5,000 will be provided to every tea garden worker, whether permanent or casual. A total of 6,03,927 tea workers across Assam will benefit from this scheme. In addition, the state government will construct 100 new high schools in tea garden regions, supplementing the 120 high schools already set up earlier.
Job Reservations and Long-term Empowerment
The Assam government has also announced a significant expansion of job reservations for children of tea garden workers. Now, 3% of Grade I and Grade II government jobs will be reserved for them, extending the existing reservation already in place for Grade III and Grade IV posts.
