Ensuring Fair Trade: A Surprise Inspection in Lohit District

In an effort to protect consumers and maintain transparency in trade, the Legal Metrology and Consumer Affairs Department in Lohit district, Arunachal Pradesh, conducted a surprise inspection of the market in Manyuliang on January 23rd. This action, under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, aimed to ensure compliance with the law and safeguard consumer interests.

Non-compliant Trading Units Faced Consequences

During the inspection, two cases were registered against trading units found using unverified weighing instruments for commercial transactions. These units were instructed to cease using the unverified instruments immediately and were directed to have their weights and measures re-verified before the due date, as per the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

Continued Vigilance and Education

The inspection team emphasized that such surprise checks would continue across the district to maintain consumer protection and ensure transparency. Additionally, traders were sensitized to the importance of using verified and stamped weights and measures to avoid legal action.

Implications for North East Region and Beyond

This initiative underscores the commitment of the Arunachal Pradesh government to consumer protection and fair trade. Such measures are crucial in a region like the North East, where remote locations and diverse cultural practices can sometimes lead to inconsistencies in trading practices. This commitment to fair trade aligns with the broader Indian context, where the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, seeks to protect the rights of consumers nationwide.

A Call for Consumer Vigilance

The department urged consumers to remain vigilant and report any discrepancies in weights and measures to the authorities. This collaboration between the department and consumers is essential in maintaining a transparent and fair trading environment in the region.

Looking Forward

As the Legal Metrology and Consumer Affairs Department continues its efforts to safeguard consumer interests, it serves as a reminder to all traders to adhere to the laws and regulations governing trade. By doing so, they contribute to a fair and transparent marketplace, benefiting both consumers and businesses alike. It is the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to uphold these principles, ensuring a prosperous and harmonious trading environment for all.
