In a significant move towards improving the region's infrastructure, Manipur has embarked on the first-ever rigid pavement project, addressing the long-standing issue of poor roads. This development holds considerable importance for North East India, a region often challenged by inadequate road networks.

The Project: Scope and Financing

The project, named the Manipur Urban Road, Drainage and Asset Management Improvement Project (MURDAMIP), is estimated to cost Rs 3,647.23 crore. A substantial portion of the funding, Rs 2,896.02 crore, comes from an Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) loan. The project aims to improve connectivity, safety, and resilience of urban and suburban roads and drainage networks in greater Imphal, covering a total road length of 547.281 km.

The Need: Addressing Poor Road Conditions

The initiative is prompted by the poor road conditions in Manipur, which are due to factors such as inadequate drainage systems, frequent waterlogging, floods, traffic congestion, and safety risks. The project's use of short panel concrete technology is expected to address these issues, leading to improved road quality and durability.

Progress and Challenges

As of the current status, 10% of the construction works of concrete roads and around 4% of the drainage portions have been completed. Nearly 50% of the bituminous road construction works have been completed. Despite the progress, the project faces challenges, including the complexities of the short panel concrete technology and the need for careful management to ensure the project's success.
