Analysis: Commercial operation of 2nd unit of SLHEP commences

Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project: A Milestone for India's Green Energy Future

Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project: A Milestone for India's Green Energy Future

On December 23, 2020, the second unit (250 MW) of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) commenced commercial operation. This event marks a significant step towards commissioning India's largest hydropower project and boosting the country's renewable energy capacity.

Achieving Clean and Sustainable Energy Goals

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated the commercial operation of Unit 2 of the SLHEP virtually. He highlighted the project as a symbol of India's commitment to clean and sustainable energy, supporting the growth of Northeast India, strengthening the national grid, and advancing India's ambitious net-zero goals.

Enhancing Energy Supply in the Northeast

Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal lauded the NHPC's achievement, emphasizing that the Subansiri Lower project would greatly improve energy supply in the Northeast and serve as a testament to India's commitment to state-of-the-art, sustainable power systems.

Strengthening National Grid Resilience

NHPC CMD Bhupender Gupta expressed gratitude for the support received from various stakeholders and expressed confidence that the project would strengthen the national grid, support sustainable development in the Northeast, and provide reliable renewable energy to meet growing demand.

Regional Implications and Benefits

Upon full commissioning, the SLHEP will provide free power allocations to Arunachal and Assam, significantly strengthening regional energy availability. The Northeast region will receive 1,000 MW from the project, which will contribute to the region's long-term development and prosperity by boosting tourism, enhancing river navigation, and creating employment opportunities.

A Showcase of Engineering Excellence

The SLHEP is a showcase of engineering excellence, housing India's heaviest hydro generator rotors, largest stators, and biggest main inlet valves. The project also features pioneering construction innovations, including the nation's largest aggregate processing plants, the highest-capacity batching plant, and the first-ever use of Rotec's tower belt for dam concreting in India.

Flood Moderation and Riverbank Protection

The SLHEP provides a dedicated 442 million cubic meter flood cushion for safer management during the monsoon season. The project has also implemented extensive riverbank protection and erosion control measures along the Subansiri river.

Socioeconomic Benefits and CSR Initiatives

During its construction phase, the project engaged around 7,000 local people daily and created numerous direct and indirect jobs through contractors, service providers, and local markets. The NHPC has also invested around Rs 155 crore in CSR initiatives across Arunachal and Assam.

Looking Ahead

With the commissioning of Unit 2, the project is moving swiftly towards commissioning the remaining units as per the stipulated schedule. Upon full commissioning, the SLHEP will boost India's renewable energy capacity, enhance national grid resilience, and usher in a new era in massive clean energy contribution.
