In a significant breakthrough for the scientific community, a rare fish species, the Congaturi halfbeak (Hyporhamphus limbatus), has been found in the Siang River, Arunachal Pradesh, for the first time. Redefining the Siang River's Ecological Significance

The Siang River, one of India's least studied major rivers, has now gained prominence as the primary Himalayan artery feeding the Brahmaputra. The presence of a coastal-associated fish species in this river, hundreds of kilometers upstream from the coast, underscores the river's ecological importance and the remarkable upstream migration capabilities of certain fish species.

Expanding the Distribution Range of the Halfbeak Fish

Originally described from the Malabar Coast in the 19th century, Hyporhamphus limbatus has now been documented from the Siang River, marking its first-ever record from Arunachal Pradesh and the upper Brahmaputra drainage. Previously, this euryhaline species had been reported from rivers such as the Ganga, Hooghly, Mekong, and even Himalayan rivers in Nepal and Bangladesh, but it had never been recorded from Northeast India.

The discovery of Hyporhamphus limbatus in the Siang River has added a new species to the fish species list of Arunachal Pradesh and the North-Eastern region of India. Zoologist Kento Kadu, who led the study, emphasizes the importance of conducting an in-depth study on the habitat preferences, ecological dynamics, and migratory behavior of Hyporhamphus limbatus, considering the ongoing climate changes.
