Analysis: Govt activates VDPs to improve security on Indo-Bangla order

Meghalaya's Progress and Security: A New Era

Meghalaya's Commitment to Border Security and Economic Growth

In a significant move, the Meghalaya government has emphasized the activation of Village Defence Parties (VDPS) to enhance security along the international border. This announcement was made by Governor CH Vijayashankar during the 77th Republic Day function in Shillong.

Securing the Indo-Bangladesh Border

Governor Vijayashankar reaffirmed the government's dedication to securing the Indo-Bangladesh border, working closely with the Border Security Force (BSF) to monitor the situation. The governor also highlighted the peaceful law and order situation in the state over the past year, allowing for the successful conduct of various festivals and national day celebrations.

Strengthening Peace and Security Along the Assam-Meghalaya Border

The governor specifically mentioned the timely intervention by the government in Lapangap village, West Jaintia Hills district, which prevented any escalation of a potentially volatile situation and allowed farmers to complete their harvest. This underscores the government's commitment to maintaining peace and security along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Meghalaya: The Second Fastest Growing State in India

In a remarkable achievement, Meghalaya has been identified as the second fastest growing state in India, with a real Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth of 9.66% in the financial year 2025. This growth rate is nearly double that of 2018, making Meghalaya the only state to consistently maintain an average 10% real GSDP growth for three consecutive years post the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Meghalaya Excellence Framework: A Roadmap to Success

To achieve this growth and maintain its position, the Meghalaya government has introduced the Meghalaya Excellence Framework. This strategic roadmap aims to position Meghalaya among India's top 10 states in per capita income and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2032. The framework focuses on driving investments, improving education and skilling, and creating future-ready infrastructure.

Mission 10: A Bold Strategy for Economic Growth

Launched in 2022, Mission 10 is a bold strategy aimed at elevating Meghalaya into one of India's top 10 states in per capita income and SDG performance by 2032. This ambitious plan aims to triple the state's economy within a decade, from $5 billion in 2022 to $10 billion by 2028 and $16 billion by 2032.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

The success of Meghalaya's economic growth strategy and border security initiatives has significant implications for the North East region and India as a whole. By demonstrating effective governance, economic development, and commitment to peace, Meghalaya serves as a model for other states in the region to follow.

Looking Ahead

As Meghalaya continues to strive for economic growth and security, it remains committed to resilient and inclusive development. By maintaining its focus on the Meghalaya Excellence Framework and Mission 10, the state is firmly on course to realising its vision of becoming one of India's top 10 states in per capita income and SDG performance by 2032.
