Analysis: Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway: A scar runs deep along LAC

Frontier Highway Land Compensation Scam: A Concern for Northeast India

Frontier Highway Land Compensation Scam: A Concern for Northeast India

The Frontier Highway, an ambitious project aimed at connecting the uninhabited areas of upper Arunachal along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), has been marred by a significant land compensation scam. This scam, unfolding in the Lada-Sarli stretch of the Frontier Highway, raises concerns not only for the project's execution but also for the region's transparency and accountability.

The Scale of the Scam

The Frontier Highway land compensation scam is believed to be a premeditated and systematic loot of state and central coffers. Out of the Rs 241 crore sanctioned as land compensation for the Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway stretch, it is alleged that more than Rs 100 crore was paid against bogus and inflated bills.

Altered Alignment and Strategic Implications

The proposed alignment of the Lada-Sarli stretch of the Frontier Highway, which runs north-south following the Pachuk valley, has raised questions as it defeats the very concept of a frontier road. The original proposed alignment, as recommended by the Empowered Committee on Border Infrastructure (ECBI) and the department of border management (DoBM), was supposed to pass along the LAC within a 100-kilometer radius.

The Impact on Northeast India and Beyond

The Frontier Highway project is crucial for boosting frontier communication, enabling security forces mobilization during emergencies, and improving tourism in the inaccessible Himalayan range. The scam, therefore, not only undermines the project's progress but also raises questions about the region's ability to manage large-scale infrastructure projects effectively.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation into the Frontier Highway land compensation scam continues, it is essential that the government and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) ensure thorough and unbiased inquiry. The region's people are watching closely to see whether the ACB will hold every accused accountable, trace each money trail, and restore the people's faith in the system.
