In a significant move, the Meghalaya government has activated the Village Defence Parties (VDPS) to enhance security along the international border. This decision was announced by Governor CH Vijayashankar during the 77th Republic Day function held in Shillong.
Securing the Indo-Bangladesh Border
Governor Vijayashankar emphasized the government's commitment to securing the Indo-Bangladesh border and maintaining close coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) in this regard. He also highlighted the successful prevention of escalating border incidents, such as the one in Lapangap village, West Jaintia Hills district.
Peace and Security in the North East Region
The governor also reaffirmed the government's commitment to fostering peace and security along the Assam-Meghalaya border. This commitment is crucial for maintaining stability in the North East region, a sensitive and strategically important part of India.
Meghalaya's Economic Growth
Governor Vijayashankar claimed that Meghalaya is the second fastest-growing state in India after Tamil Nadu, with an impressive 9.66% real Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth in the financial year 2025. The state has consistently maintained an average 10% real GSDP growth for three consecutive years post the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meghalaya Excellence Framework and Mission 10
The Meghalaya Excellence Framework serves as the state's strategic roadmap to achieve its vision of being among India's top 10 states in per capita income and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2032. Aligned with the vision of 'Viksit Bharat,' the framework focuses on driving investments, improving education, and creating future-ready infrastructure.
Ambitious Economic Leap for Meghalaya
Launched in 2022, Mission 10 aims to elevate Meghalaya into India's top 10 states in per capita income and SDG performance by 2032. This ambitious strategy involves tripling the state's economy within a decade, from $5 billion in 2022 to $10 billion by 2028 and $16 billion by 2032.
