Tragedy in Assam: High-Voltage Surge Claims Lives at a Wedding

Unforeseen Tragedy at a Wedding in Assam

A wedding day, a day of joy and celebration, turned into a day of mourning in Assam's Chirang district when a high-voltage surge caused an electrocution incident, claiming the lives of three individuals and critically injuring another. This incident, which occurred on the night of January 25, 2026, has raised concerns about the safety and maintenance of power infrastructure in the region.

The Fatal Incident

The tragedy unfolded at Amteka No. 1 Elengmari village when a Super Tension (ST) line wire snapped and fell onto a Low Tension (LT) line, causing electricity to surge across the area. The surge, which occurred around 10.30 pm, electrocuted those who came into contact with live wires. Among the victims were Daimalu Narzary, Bijoy Mushahary, and Michael Basumatary. Michael, who had gotten married earlier in the day, was one of the deceased.

The Wide-Spread Impact

Residents reported that the surge was not confined to the wedding house alone but spread to several parts of the village, affecting multiple households. The incident plunged the area into panic, with the power surge affecting various households.

Questions Over Infrastructure Safety

The incident has raised questions over the maintenance and safety of power infrastructure in the area. The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) member from the Nishima constituency has urged the state government to provide compensation to the bereaved families and ensure accountability. The BTC member has also emphasized the need for regular checks and maintenance of power lines to prevent such incidents in the future.

Implications for North East Region and Beyond

The incident in Chirang underscores the importance of maintaining and upgrading power infrastructure, not just in Assam but across the North East region and India as a whole. As the region continues to develop, the demand for electricity is expected to increase, making it crucial to ensure that the power infrastructure is robust and safe.

Reflecting on the Tragedy

As we reflect on this tragic incident, it is essential to remember the victims and their families. It is also a reminder to the authorities to prioritize the safety of the public, especially in areas where power infrastructure is in place. The incident serves as a call to action for the government and power distribution companies to take necessary steps to prevent such tragedies in the future.
