Transition to a January-December Academic Year

Mizoram, a state in North East India, has announced its decision to switch the school academic calendar from the current April-March cycle to a January-December schedule, effective from the 2027-28 academic year. This change will apply only to primary to high school levels, with Classes 11 and 12 continuing under the existing cycle.

The decision was made following extensive consultations with various organizations, teachers, and parents. Over 231 groups participated, and 92.2% favored the new calendar, while 6.5% preferred the status quo. A small 1.3% advocated for a separate calendar for the elementary section.

The government believes the January-December cycle is more suitable for Mizoram, considering the state's lifestyle, climate, and topography. Additionally, the government is considering school vacations during the rainy season to ensure student safety, as landslides and rockfalls are common during this period, particularly in towns.

The Mizoram government will discontinue common school uniforms across government schools from the next academic session, citing numerous lapses pointed out by schools and teachers' organizations. Meanwhile, the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) has decided to stop awarding distinctions, divisions, or ranks in Class 10 and 12 results to promote quality education and reduce unhealthy competition among students.
