Shillong Cantonment Faces Unequal Land Rent Policies
In a move that could significantly impact property owners and residents in Shillong Cantonment, a call has been made for a unified land rent policy. The demand comes from BJP Minister Sanbor Shullai, who recently led a delegation to New Delhi to discuss the matter with Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, and Director General of Defence Estate, Shoba Gupta.

The crux of the issue lies in the disparity between land rent in cantonment and municipal areas. Minister Shullai argues that there should not be two different tax structures for these areas, citing the potential financial burden on cantonment residents and property owners.

The implementation of an interim policy has led to an abnormal rise in tax in the cantonment area, according to Minister Shullai. This has resulted in pending cases in the Supreme Court and various high courts across the country. To address this, the BJP delegation has requested the ministry to amend the interim policy and implement 25% of the calculated Site Rent Tax (STR) for existing lessees.

During their meeting, the BJP delegation also requested speedy implementation of building bye-laws and the expediting of the sanctioning of a reservoir with a capacity of 6 lakh litres to meet the water requirements of the Shillong Cantonment area. Minister Shullai also extended an invitation for the Union Defence Minister of State to lay the foundation stone for various upcoming projects in the cantonment area. The Union Defence Minister of State is expected to visit Shillong in February.
