Climate Change Awareness: Empowering the Youth in Assam

Climate Change Awareness Empowering the Youth in Assam

In an effort to sensitize the younger generation about the pressing issue of climate change, a climate change awareness class was held at Bajali Higher Secondary School in Pathsala, Assam. The event, attended by senior government officials and environmental experts, aimed to equip students with the knowledge and responsibility to combat climate change and promote sustainable living.

Urgent Action and Community Involvement

M.K. Yadava, IFS (Retd), Special Chief Secretary, Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department, emphasized the urgency of collective action to address climate change. He stressed that students must recognize their role in protecting forests, wildlife, and natural resources, as the future of the environment is in their hands. District Commissioner Mridul Kumar Das underscored the importance of community participation in sustainable development, highlighting that it can only be achieved when communities, particularly young minds, are actively involved in environmental protection.

Awareness and Behavioral Change

Anjan Sarma, President of Mahabahu Climate Change, emphasized the need for awareness and behavioral change. He noted that small actions at the individual level can have a significant impact in the fight against climate change. Encouraging students to stay informed about environmental changes by reading newspapers daily, Mridul Kumar Das encouraged active participation in environmental conservation and awareness initiatives.

North East India and Climate Change

The North East region of India, with its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems, is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The region's economy heavily relies on agriculture and forest-based resources, making it crucial for the younger generation to understand the importance of environmental protection and sustainable living.

Looking Forward: A Climate-Resilient Future

The interactive session concluded with a collective call to adopt eco-friendly practices and strengthen environmental awareness at the grassroots level. By empowering the youth with the knowledge and responsibility to combat climate change, the event aimed to build a climate-resilient future for Assam and the North East region as a whole.
