Analysis: Mobile internet back in Karbi Anglong districts; prohibitory orders continue

Restoring Peace and Connectivity in Karbi Anglong Districts

Mobile Internet Restored in Karbi Anglong Amid Improved Situation

After a turbulent period marked by violence and unrest, mobile internet services have been reinstated in the Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts of Assam. This development comes following an improvement in the law and order situation, according to an order issued by Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political Department.

A Gradual Return to Normalcy

Shops and business establishments are reopening, and people are venturing out to purchase essential items. However, strict security vigil continues across both districts, with security forces deployed in the worst-affected areas. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) remain in force, ensuring public peace and tranquility.

Congress Leaders Condemn Negligence

Congress leaders and workers, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) secretary Bitupon Saikia and West Karbi Anglong District Congress president Augustine Inghi, visited the residences of victims of the Karbi Anglong violence. They condemned the alleged negligence of the BJP-led state government and held it responsible for the incidents.

The Wider Context: North East and Beyond

The unrest in Karbi Anglong stems from tensions between indigenous Karbi groups and migrant communities over encroachments on Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) lands. This issue is not unique to Assam or the North East region but reflects broader challenges related to migration, resource management, and communal relations that are pertinent across India.

Looking Ahead: The Path to Lasting Peace

The restoration of mobile internet services and the gradual return of normalcy in Karbi Anglong are steps towards healing and rebuilding. However, lasting peace requires addressing the underlying issues that led to the violence, ensuring justice for the victims, and fostering a spirit of cooperation and understanding among all communities. As the situation evolves, it is crucial for all stakeholders the government, local bodies, and the public to work together towards a peaceful and prosperous future for Assam and the North East region.
