Analysis: Telangana Assembly may see heated debates over irrigation, river water-sharing

Telangana Assembly Session: A Battleground for Irrigation and River Water Disputes

Why the Telangana Assembly Session Matters

The upcoming session of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, scheduled to begin on December 28, 2025, holds significant importance due to the heated debates expected over irrigation and river water-sharing disputes. These discussions will not only shape the state's agricultural future but also reflect the political dynamics within Telangana and the broader Indian context.

Opposition's Challenge: The Palamuru-Rangareddy Irrigation Project and River Water Sharing

The opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), is poised to corner the Congress government over the Palamuru-Rangareddy irrigation project and the sharing of Godavari and Krishna river waters. KCR has accused the Congress government of compromising Telangana's rightful share of Krishna river water in the Palamuru-Rangareddy Project and betraying the state's interests.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has retaliated, blaming KCR for the injustice in Telangana in the sharing of Godavari and Krishna waters during the BRS regime. The ruling party has challenged KCR to attend the session and participate in the debate on irrigation projects and river water disputes.

Ruling Party's Counteroffensive: Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and Controversies

The Congress government has decided to hand over the case related to alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, built by the BRS government, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The ruling party has been targeting the BJP-led government at the Centre for the delay in the CBI taking up the investigation.

The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project is one of the major topics expected to be discussed during the session, along with the controversial phone tapping and Formula E car race cases. The phone tapping case has entered a crucial stage with the government constituting a fresh Special Investigation Team (SIT) and questioning of former Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) chief Prabhakar Rao, who is the prime accused in the case.

North East and Indian Context

The river water disputes between Telangana and other states, such as Andhra Pradesh, mirror similar issues faced by North East states, where river water-sharing agreements are crucial for maintaining peace and ensuring equitable distribution of resources. The outcomes of these debates in Telangana could set a precedent for future negotiations among Indian states.

Reflections and Looking Forward

As the seventh session of the Telangana Legislative Assembly prepares to commence, the stage is set for intense debates on critical issues affecting the state's agricultural and political landscape. The outcome of these discussions will not only determine the future of irrigation projects but also shed light on the political strategies of the ruling Congress party and the opposition BRS.

The North East region can draw valuable insights from these debates, as they grapple with their own water-sharing disputes and strive for equitable resource distribution. As the nation moves forward, it is essential to foster dialogue and collaboration among states to ensure sustainable development and maintain regional harmony.
