Power Tariff Clarification in West Garo Hills Sparks Debate
In a move to address concerns and clarify misconceptions, the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) has issued a statement regarding the alleged power tariff hike across West Garo Hills (WGH). The statement comes following accusations published recently, sparking debate and concern among consumers.
Baseless Tariff Hike Allegations
The MePDCL investigation found no evidence to support the claims of a tariff hike across WGH. The current Distribution Franchisee (DF), M/s SAI Computers Ltd, is billing consumers strictly according to the prevailing tariff approved by the MSERC and circulated by the MePDCL.
Addressing Billing Irregularities
The MePDCL clarified that the perceived tariff hike in certain areas, such as Rajaballa, Phulbari, Bhaitbari, and Tikrikilla, is due to the streamlining process being undertaken by the new DF. This process aims to address under-billing and other billing irregularities that occurred during the previous franchisee operator, M/s FEDCO Ltd.
Billing Procedures and Complaints
The corporation explained that bills are prepared based on actual meter readings for consumers with functioning meters. For consumers without meters or with defective ones, bills are prepared on an assessment basis as per the approved tariff. As of now, there have been no complaints of power/tariff hike received from consumers in other parts of WGH, apart from the aforementioned areas.
Power Theft and Reliability
The MePDCL highlighted rampant power theft cases in the areas mentioned above, which contribute to AT&C losses. Various initiatives have been taken to improve the power sector's reliability, such as upgrading sub-stations, infrastructures, and implementing schemes for loss reduction.
Implications for Northeast India and Beyond
The clarification and measures taken by the MePDCL hold significance for consumers in WGH and beyond. Ensuring accurate billing, addressing power theft, and improving reliability are essential steps towards a more efficient and sustainable power sector in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states.
Looking Forward: A Sustainable Power Sector for All
As the MePDCL continues its efforts to improve the power sector in WGH, consumers are encouraged to understand the corrective measures being taken and to cooperate in minimizing power interruptions. A sustainable and reliable power sector is crucial for the economic growth and development of the region, ensuring a better quality of life for all its inhabitants.
