Assam's Transparent Voter Roll: A New Era for Elections
The publication of the draft electoral roll for Assam, prepared after a Special Revision exercise, marks a significant step towards ensuring a transparent and inclusive voting process in the state. This development, which includes the first-ever Gram Sabha scrutiny, is of utmost importance as we approach the 2026 Assembly elections.
Transparent and Public Scrutiny
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anurag Goel emphasized the exceptional transparency of this process. For the first time in Assam, the draft voter list will be read aloud in Gram Sabha meetings, ensuring omissions or duplications are identified immediately. This level of public scrutiny is designed to ensure the electoral roll is accurate and error-free.
Streamlined Process and Deadlines
The claims and objections window will remain open till January 22, 2026. No forms will be accepted between January 23 and February 10, when the final electoral roll will be published. Any grievances arising after publication must be addressed by February 15, provided the complainant belongs to the same constituency. Appeals against the District Commissioner's decision can be made to the CEO, whose decision will be final.
Increase in Voter Turnout and Polling Stations
The draft roll lists 2,52,01,624 voters, reflecting a 1.35% increase over the previous final roll. Assam now has 31,486 polling stations, with 1,830 new stations added. The highest number of electors is in Dalgaon (Constituency 51) with 3,01,326 voters, while Dhemaji (Datmat) has the lowest number of polling stations with 126 booths.
Relevance to North East and India
The implementation of this transparent process in Assam sets a precedent for other states in the North East and India. By ensuring the accuracy and inclusivity of the electoral roll, the Election Commission is taking a crucial step towards strengthening our democratic process.
Looking Forward
With everything on track so far, and meetings held with political parties, the stage is set for a fair and transparent election in Assam. The public's active participation is crucial in this process, as it will help deliver an accurate and error-free electoral roll.
