Restoring Peace in Manipur: An Academic Discourse

Restoring Peace in Manipur: An Academic Discourse

In a significant move towards fostering peace and stability in Manipur, the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) organized an academic discourse on Normalisation in Manipur. Held at Sangai Hall of Hotel Imphal, the event brought together a diverse group of individuals, including academicians, civil society representatives, and community leaders.

Exploring Pathways for Peace

Acting President of FOCS, BM Yaima Shah, presided over the discourse, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and collective reflection in restoring peace in the state. The academic engagement aimed to explore constructive ways to address the complex challenges Manipur faces.

Community Leaders' Perspectives

Several community leaders, such as Dr. Raheijuddin Sheikh, Dr. LS Phaomei, Serto Ahao Kom, Jaiche Thangsinsam, Ch. Lalpu Aimol, and Nelson Chithung, participated in the discussion, sharing their insights and concerns.

Government Assurances and Progress

BM Shah referred to assurances given by the Union Home Ministry regarding the resettlement of internally displaced persons and the opening of National Highways by December 2025. While some progress has been made in resettlement, no concrete steps have been taken towards reopening the highways, according to Shah.

Crucial Role of National Highways

Unrestricted movement along National Highways is crucial for restoring normalcy, economic stability, and public confidence, as stated by BM Shah. FOCS is considering formulating a roadmap to move the state forward in the absence of adequate measures on key issues.

Deliberations on Peace-building, Governance, and Social Cohesion

The discourse witnessed detailed deliberations on peace-building, governance, and social cohesion, with participants underlining the need for inclusive, people-centric approaches to achieve lasting normalisation in Manipur.

Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

The peace and stability of Manipur have broader implications for Northeast India and the nation as a whole. Achieving normalisation in Manipur could serve as a model for other conflict-affected regions in the Northeast, promoting peace, unity, and development.

Moving Forward: A Collective Effort

The academic discourse underscored the need for continued dialogue, collaboration, and collective action to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur. The involvement of civil society, community leaders, and academics is essential in shaping a more peaceful and prosperous future for the state.
