Analysis: Protest against murder of Tripura student after racial slur

Rising Tide of Racial Hatred: The Plight of Northeast Students in Mainland India

A Haunting Indictment: The Brutal Killing of Anjel Chakma

The tragic death of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, has once again brought to light the pervasive issue of racial violence against Northeast Indians in mainland India. Chakma succumbed to his injuries on December 26, 2025, following a racially motivated assault on December 9.

Systematic Violence: A Recurring Pattern

The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has condemned this incident, viewing it as part of a systematic and recurring pattern of violence faced by Northeast Indians in metropolitan hubs like Bengaluru and Delhi. CoMSO Chairman Roy Kupar Synrem emphasized that this heinous crime is not an isolated incident.

The North East Connection

The Northeast region shares a border with mainland India and is home to numerous ethnic groups with distinct languages and cultures. The region's students and professionals often face derogatory slurs, physical violence, and institutional neglect when they move to mainland cities for education or employment.

Demands for Change

  • Fast-Track Justice: CoMSO urges the Uttarakhand government and the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure a swift trial for the accused.
  • National Anti-Racism Law: CoMSO demands the enactment of a comprehensive Anti-Racism Law to address the unique nature of hate crimes based on racial and ethnic features.
  • Safety Protocols for NE Students: The Central Government is called upon to establish dedicated 24/7 North East Helplines and specialized police cells in major cities to ensure the safety of Northeast students and working professionals.
  • Accountability of Educational Hubs: Institutions and local administrations must be held accountable for failing to foster a safe and inclusive environment for Northeast students.

Reflections and Future Actions

CoMSO, as a representative body of indigenous voices in Meghalaya, stands in solidarity with Tripura and the Northeast. Synrem asserted that CoMSO will not remain silent while the youth are murdered for the way they look. If the mainland continues to treat them as outsiders, they are effectively pushing Northeast Indians toward a sense of total alienation. CoMSO is ready to join forces with other regional bodies of the Northeast to launch a democratic agitation if concrete steps are not taken to address this rising tide of racial hatred.
