Analysis: Chakma body seeks removal of Dehradun SSP in Anjel Chakma murder case

Allegations of Bias in Uttarakhand Murder Investigation: AICSU Urges CBI Intervention

Allegations of Bias in Uttarakhand Murder Investigation: AICSU Urges CBI Intervention

The recent murder of Anjel Chakma, a student from Tripura in Dehradun, has sparked controversy and renewed concerns over racial violence against students from Northeast India in mainland India. The All-India Chakma Students Union (AICSU) has accused Uttarakhand's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh of bias, misinformation, and attempting to shield the accused, leading to a call for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation.

Doubts over Police Investigation

The AICSU has raised concerns over what it describes as procedural lapses by the Uttarakhand Police, including an alleged three-day delay in registering the First Information Report (FIR). The organization also alleges that the police have prematurely ruled out a racial motive and effectively given a clean chit to the accused, despite objections raised by the victim's family.

SSP's Statements Questioned

The AICSU has criticized SSP Ajai Singh for making statements to the media that it claims are aimed at influencing public opinion in favor of the accused. The student body alleges that the SSP's conclusions are based primarily on statements made by the accused while in police custody, which it considers unreliable.

Northeast Students' Safety in Question

The incident has once again brought to light the issue of safety and security for students from Northeast India in mainland India. Despite assurances from the government, incidents of racial violence continue to occur, raising questions about the effectiveness of measures aimed at protecting these students.

Call for CBI Intervention

In view of these allegations, the AICSU has demanded that the investigation be transferred to the CBI at the earliest, warning that continued delay could lead to material evidence being destroyed or manipulated. The organization believes that a fair and impartial investigation by the CBI is necessary to ensure justice for Anjel Chakma and to uphold the dignity of Northeast students in India.

Reflections and Looking Forward

The incident in Dehradun underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address the issue of racial violence against students from Northeast India. This includes not only addressing incidents of violence but also addressing the systemic issues that contribute to such incidents, such as biased investigations and insensitive responses from law enforcement agencies.

As the investigation into Anjel Chakma's murder continues, it is crucial that all parties involved remain committed to ensuring a fair and impartial investigation. The North East region and India as a whole must strive to create an environment where students from the region can pursue their education without fear of discrimination or violence.
