Windows 11 Boot Failures: A Widespread Problem

Microsoft is currently investigating reports of Windows 11 devices failing to boot after installing the January 2026 Patch Tuesday security updates. This issue, characterized by the "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error, has affected Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, causing systems to display a stop error during boot.

Impacted Devices and Editions

The affected devices include all editions of Windows 11 version 24H2 and version 25H2, following the installation of the KB5074109 cumulative update. As of now, only physical devices have been reported to be impacted, with no virtual machines affected.

Investigation and Resolution

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is currently investigating whether it is linked to a Windows update. Affected users and administrators are being asked to submit feedback via the Feedback Hub app. The company has also stated that it will confirm if the problem is a regression caused by a Windows update once more details are available.

Relevance to Northeast India and Broader Indian Context

The impact of this issue extends beyond the United States, reaching users in Northeast India and other parts of the country. As Windows 11 gains traction in the region, it is essential for users to be aware of such issues and the steps to resolve them.

In a separate development, Microsoft has also released emergency out-of-band updates to fix an issue that caused Microsoft Outlook to freeze when PST files are stored in cloud services such as OneDrive or Dropbox. This issue primarily affects enterprise environments. Additionally, the 2026 CISO Budget Benchmark report has been released, offering insights into how top leaders are planning, spending, and prioritizing their security budgets for the year ahead.

In the meantime, it is crucial to ensure that systems are regularly backed up and updated to minimize the impact of such issues.
