Analysis: Five foreigners who left ISL because of uncertainty

Uncertain Future of ISL: Impact on Foreign Players and Indian Football

The Uncertain Future of the Indian Super League: A Threat to Indian Football and Beyond

The Indian Super League (ISL), one of India's premier football leagues, is facing an uncertain future, causing ripples of concern among players, clubs, and fans alike. As discussions between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the clubs' hierarchy continue, the delay in the 2025-26 ISL season is causing growing frustration and uncertainty for foreign players.

Foreign Players Leaving Indian Football

The mounting uncertainty has led some foreign players to leave Indian football altogether. Here are five such players who have decided to move on:

1. Borja Herrera

Spanish midfielder Borja Herrera, a crucial player for FC Goa, was one of the first to leave due to the uncertainty. Herrera played a key role in helping FC Goa win the Super Cup title but ultimately decided to leave the club, citing the lack of assurances about when the ISL would start.

2. Javier Hernandez

Javier Hernandez, a former ISL champion with ATK, had a successful stint with Jamshedpur FC in the 2024-25 season. However, the uncertainty of the ISL forced him to return to Spain, where he now plays for Segunda Federacion, the fourth tier of Spanish football.

3. Javier Siverio

Javier Siverio, who performed well for Jamshedpur FC and helped them reach the ISL semi-finals, moved to Thai League club PT Prachuap FC due to the instability in Indian football.

4. Edgar Mendez

Edgar Mendez, who scored 10 goals and provided four assists for Bengaluru FC in the 2025-26 season, also left due to the uncertain situation at the club. He now plays for a club in Thailand.

5. Jesus Jimenez

Spanish forward Jesus Jimenez, who scored 11 goals for Kerala Blasters in the 2024-25 ISL campaign, left Indian football to play in the Polish first division (Ekstraklasa) for Nieciecza FC.

Relevance to North East India and Broader Indian Context

The exodus of foreign players from the ISL has implications for the North East region and the broader Indian context. The region, known for its rich footballing talent, could see a decrease in foreign players, potentially affecting the quality of play and the overall competitiveness of local teams.

Reflections and Future Implications

The uncertainty surrounding the ISL highlights the need for more transparency and stability in Indian football. The league's inability to provide assurances to foreign players about their future salaries and the timely start of the season is causing concern and leading to the departure of valuable talent. If the situation continues, it could have a long-term impact on the development of Indian football, particularly in the North East region.

It is crucial for the AIFF and the clubs to address the issues promptly to ensure the continued growth and success of the ISL and Indian football as a whole. The future of Indian football depends on it.
